Colchester General Hospital

Turner Rd, Colchester CO4 5JL, UK – 01206 747474

I have not had any major issues here. The staff do the best they can with ever decreasing resources and increasing pressures.

We always find it easy to complain, but find it even easier not to give praise when it is due. I recently was admitted to the Surgical Assessment Unit and then transferred to Mersea Ward, I received the most amazing care and treatment, the doctors, nurses and domestic staff in both wards were absolutely lovely and apart from that noticeable fact that they are so extremely busy, I don't know how they keep going, but they do and full credit to their commitment and professionalism. My husband bought them some chocolates, (he must of been impressed as he doesn't buy me chocolates!), please please pass on these deserved words to the staff on those two units mentioned. Thank you Kindly Julie Reilly

Oaks Hospital

120 Mile End Rd, Mile End, Colchester CO4 5XR, UK – 01206 752121

Very nice and professional staff. Top standard care.

This place looks and feels like a premium hospital (very clean), I went here for a gastroscopy, the staff here are great and professional, the process took a while to go through and there was a wait, but thats because i was referred here instead of being a member (as such) as it tooks a few weeks to get the actual gastroscopy appointment. The gastroscopy appointment itself was fine, they know exactly what there doing and was glad to be referred here. Also the parking was free, which is always a bonus, specially as I never carry change with me.

The Lakes Mental Health Hospital

132 Turner Rd, Mile End, Colchester CO4 5JT, UK – 01206 228712

I've done several stints of rehab here and whilst the later hospital is more locked down, clinical treatment is good and if you are scared, violent and have to be restrained, this is done with the minimum force, no deliberate brutality. It's cheaper than The Priory, so if you've gone on a trip you can't get yourself down from, ring their number and ask to speak with a crisis team or ask your GP to refer you. It can be very scary due to the nature of patients being emotionally disturbed. My only gripe is there is understaffing and presumably the pay isn't great for the staff so they need longer hours, which doesn't help this most highly stressed situation. Another problem I've encountered is issues surrounding section paperwork. You are entitled to legal representation and advocacy if you are to be held in a rehab facility against your will, this is not always forthcoming. Worst still patients under section have been asked to sign other paperwork, including adoption forms, immigration, criminal confession and other life changing issues when they are legally not in the capability to sign them. Essex Social Services are the most regular breakers of that law and this needs to be exposed. That said, there's a good community spirit among the patients/inmates (if it's got locks it's by definition a prison) , and great chances to learn from each other as well as the excellent staff and community volunteers of all grades. You can learn a lot there, it would be a good place to learn about mental health and Anglia Ruskin University has used the facility in in-work training schemes for nurses and doctors.

Very good

Local hospitals - community hospitals and hospitals with A&E departments for CO1 1PY.

The new NHS website below is very well worth a look. Hospitals are not only listed but evaluated. I certainly know which ones I would go to! At the very least you will know what questions to ask if you are sent to one which has not entered its data. Good luck!
